  • Largest market share gain in Canada of any manufacturer

  • Passenger car sales double

October 3, 2011 , Windsor, Ontario - Chrysler Canada today announced the company's 22nd month of consecutive sales growth, reporting sales of 19,255 for the month of September 2011 compared with 16,135 in September 2010. September sales were up 19 per cent versus one year ago, representing the company's best September sales since 2001.

"July 2011 marked our best July ever and now we have our strongest September in 10 years. What can I say, business is good," said Reid Bigland, President and CEO of Chrysler Canada. "Canadians are rapidly discovering our dramatically improved fuel economy, vehicle interiors and new products, which is translating into strong sales. In fact, Chrysler is again the fastest growing auto maker in Canada for the second consecutive year, not bad."

Sales Highlights:
Passenger car sales doubled in September, led by the all-new Chrysler 200, which enjoyed its highest sales tally of the year with 866 sales reported this month compared to 484 for August, 2011. Chrysler 300 recently received the highest rating among domestic luxury sedans by Consumer Reports. Its sales rose by 76 per cent to 346, versus 197 from the same period a year ago. The fun-to-drive and fuel efficient Fiat 500 continues to impress with sales of 508 units in September.

Jeep Wrangler is enjoying a great year with September 2011 sales doubling their performance from 2010. Product enhancements introduced for 2012 including the 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, and premium interior with soft touch surfaces are just a few of the features that are resonating well with consumers and leading to increased sales.

Ram pickup truck sales continue their torrid pace with sales of 6,047 this month, representing a September sales record, as well as an increase of 35 per cent over 2010.

"Ram is the longest lasting pickup lineup in Canada, as we have the highest percentage of pickups in operation. We continue to gain pickup market share as truck buyers migrate to Ram, Canada's most durable pickup," said Dave Buckingham, Chief Operating Officer of Chrysler Canada. "With one quarter left to play in the year, there is no doubt we will sell more Rams this year than any other year since we started selling pickups many decades ago."

It's no surprise that Chrysler Town & Country is Canada's ultimate luxury minivan, with its industry-exclusive Super Stow 'n Go™ seating and best-in-class power of 283 hp while achieving fuel economy of 7.9 L/100 km. Sales for the Chrysler Town & Country in September 2011 were 362, up 42 per cent over the same period in 2010.

Chrysler Canada: Ram Unveils New, Longer RamBox®

  • Ram expands innovative RamBox® system to accommodate 1.9 metre (6-foot-4-inch) bed lengths
  • RamBox now available in all trim levels and Ram HD models
September 29, 2011 , Windsor, Ontario - Chrysler Canada has announced that the Ram Truck brand has developed a new version of the unique RamBox® cargo management system to fit Ram pickup trucks with 1.9 metre (6-foot-4-inch) bed lengths. The addition of a 1.9 metre (6-foot-4-inch) RamBox model dramatically expands the feature's availability to include the majority of Ram truck models.

Now, in addition to the 1.7 metre (5-foot-7-inch) RamBox, which was previously available only on Ram 1500 Crew Cab models, buyers can opt for RamBox on Ram pickups with 1.9 metre (6-foot-4-inch) bed lengths, including Ram 1500 regular cab and Quad Cab® models and Ram 2500 and 3500 (single rear wheel) regular cab, Crew Cab and Mega Cab models.

Ram also will offer the RamBox option on the ST price class, making the feature available on all trim levels.

"Our customers have been asking us to make the RamBox available on the 1.9 metre (6'4") bed and we are pleased to do it," said Ed Broadbear, Vice President Marketing, Chrysler Canada. "Offering Canadian truck buyers options that the competition doesn't, coupled with Ram's outstanding durability is why more pickup owners are switching to Ram than to any other pickup in Canada."

Today's announcement means that the RamBox option is now available on more than 80 per cent of all Ram pickups.

The new RamBox trucks with 1.9metre (6-foot-4-inch) bed measures 1,524 millimetres (60 inches) in length versus 1,283 millimetres (50.5 inches) for the 1.7 metre (5-foot-7-inch) model ? an increase of 18 per cent. Interior volume grows proportionately, from 207 litres (7.3 cubic feet) to 244 litres (8.6 cubic feet).

With the added length and volume, the new RamBox can hold long-handled shovels, one-piece fishing rods and up to 140 beverage cans.

For 2012, buyers will find that RamBox pricing has not increased. In fact, Ram has reduced the price of both 1.9 metre and 1.7 metre RamBoxes.

About RamBox

RamBox provides secure storage options for tradesmen, craftsmen, sportsmen, athletes and outdoorsmen. RamBox can store golf clubs, fishing rods, hockey sticks, tool boxes and more.

RamBox is a segment-exclusive cargo management system that includes three key elements:
  • Two weatherproof, lockable, drainable, lighted storage bins that run the length of the pickup bed and are as wide as the wheel well, creating up to 244 litres (8.6 cubic feet) of space with a 1.9 metre (6'4") box. The side bins are large enough to hold items including: a set of golf clubs, hockey equipment and other sporting goods, toolboxes, chainsaws or beverage cans and ice. RamBox side bins create storage along each side of the pickup bed space previously left untouched due to wheel-well intrusion. RamBox bins fit the length of the pickup bed and incorporate the space over each wheel well to secure cargo within a lit, lockable and drainable container. Lids include swing hinges with intermediate and full-open positions that lift the lid 90 degrees perpendicular to each side.
  • An adjustable bed divider/extender that fits on the lowered tailgate and adds 2 feet of additional length to secure longer loads. The bed divider creates individual compartments in the pickup bed to separate payload equipment such as tools or equipment. It can be conveniently stowed in the front of the bed when not in use.
  • And a cargo rail system with sliding, adjustable cleats for infinitely adjustable tie-down versatility.

Chrysler Group LLC Completes Refinancing and Repays U.S. and Canadian Government Loans in Full

  • More than six years ahead of schedule, Chrysler Group fulfills promise to taxpayers and repays original government loans totaling $6.7 billion, in addition to $1.8 billion of interest and other consideration
  • Intervention by U.S. and Canadian governments and strategic alliance with Fiat leads to 16 all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles currently in dealerships; more than $3 billion in facility upgrades; and increased employment with the hiring of 6,000 Chrysler Group employees
  • Company's return to profitability and double-digit worldwide sales increases show new product lineup gaining momentum in marketplace
May 24, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -
Chrysler Group LLC today announced the repayment of $7.6 billion in outstanding U.S. and Canadian government loans following the completion of new refinancing transactions. The original loans were repaid in full, more than six years ahead of schedule, along with the payment of accrued interest and additional consideration.

Today, the Company made payments of $5.9 billion to the U.S. Treasury (UST) and $1.7 billion to Export Development Canada (EDC) to retire the loans granted when Chrysler Group began operations in June 2009. EDC is the holding company through which the Canadian federal and Ontario provincial governments extended loans to Chrysler Group.

The Company borrowed $5.1 billion from the UST and $1.6 billion from the Canadian governments in June 2009 ($2.6 billion from the original loan facilities was undrawn and the facilities will be canceled). In total, Chrysler Group has paid the UST $6.5 billion and the EDC $2.0 billion, including $1.8 billion in interest and additional consideration.

"Less than two years ago, we made a commitment to repay the U.S. and Canadian taxpayers in full and today we made good on that promise," said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Chrysler Group LLC. "The loans gave us a rare second chance to demonstrate what the people of this Company can deliver and we owe a debt of gratitude to those whose intervention allowed Chrysler Group to re-establish itself as a strong and viable carmaker.

"Paying back the loans, along with the financial community's investment in our refinancing packages, marks another step in the Company returning as a competitive force in the global automotive industry."

Chrysler Group confirmed the completion of new financing transactions consisting of a term loan totaling $3.0 billion, debt securities totaling $3.2 billion and a revolving credit facility of $1.3 billion. The new financing will save Chrysler Group an estimated $350 million a year in interest expenses.

The Company used the net proceeds from the term loan and bonds, together with $1.3 billion from an equity call option exercised by Fiat for an incremental 16 percent fully diluted ownership interest, to repay the government loans. The revolving credit facility remains undrawn.

Chrysler Group continues to have more than $10 billion in liquidity after the refinancing and loan payoffs, which includes the undrawn revolving credit facility.

"Everyone in the extended Chrysler Group family, from employees to union partners to dealers and suppliers, have worked tirelessly to deliver on our promises and to win back public trust in the Company and our products," said Marchionne. "There is more work to be done as we remain focused on fulfilling the goals outlined in our 2010-2014 business plan."

Goldman, Sachs Co. advised Chrysler Group on structuring the financings and Evercore Partners advised the Company's Finance Committee.

Mopar aficionados will appreciate the latest generation "Pistol Grip" shifter combined with Auto/StickTM. With Auto/Stick, drivers may select a higher or lower gear while the transmission controller helps prevent the possibility of an over-rev condition. At the rear, the differential has been boosted with a new 3.92 rear axle ratio for enhanced acceleration ? unique to the Mopar Charger. Initial testing of the Mopar '11 Charger has shown 0-to-100 km/h blasts in the low five-second range.

Enhancements to the chassis include adding larger front 30mm solid stabilizer bar and rear 20mm solid stabilizer bar, increases from 27mm and 16mm (respectively). Adding to the overall stability and handling of the Mopar Charger are front and rear strut tower braces. For increased luggage space, the rear tower-to-tower brace may be easily removed.

Specific-design, 20-inch x 8-inch "Envy" wheels are fitted with Goodyear F1 Supercar 245/45ZR20 tires at all four corners. Wheels, painted a high-gloss black, are a five-spoke design with a 45mm offset and include specific Mopar centre caps, which complement the overall "Pitch Black" exterior finish of the Mopar Charger.

Excellent stopping power is provided through vented rotors measuring 345mm x 28mm up front that are fitted with dual-piston, sliding calipers. At the rear, vented rotors measuring 320mm x 22mm, coupled with single-piston calipers are used.

Available only in a "Pitch Black" finish, exterior highlights of the Mopar Charger include a pair of Mopar Blue racing stripes running from the front air dam across the hood and over the roof ending at the bottom of the rear fascia with integrated dual exhaust. Ornamentation is limited to a front grille and rear-deck Mopar badge. A rear spoiler is standard on the Charger special-edition model.

Inside, unique Katzkin™ leather seats are striped and stitched in Mopar Blue thread. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is identically trimmed. Engine-turned instrument panel bezels and a special identification plaque identifying the vehicle as part of a limited edition of 1,000 are affixed to the instrument panel. Owners also receive a custom Mopar key fob.

Bright pedal covers, premium floor mats with the Mopar® logo and front-door sill entry guards featuring the Mopar logo also are included with the package.

The Mopar '11 Charger will be built in Brampton, Ontario, and completed at an upfit centre in Windsor, Ontario. The Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the limited-edition Mopar '11 Charger is $44,495.

Customers who purchase a Mopar '11 Charger will receive a personalized owner kit in a customized Mopar '11 box. The kit will include a certificate with the vehicle identification number (VIN), exact date of manufacture and the number of the vehicle. The kit will also include a brochure that highlights the unique features of the vehicle, as well as exclusive Mopar '11 merchandise.

  • The new 2012 Fiat 500c arrives in Canadian Fiat Studios beginning in Spring 2011 with a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $19,995
April 21, 2011 , Windsor, Ontario - Expanding on the iconic qualities that have made the original Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) a timeless icon, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio combines open-air freedom and driving enjoyment with beautiful Italian styling, and the best of European engineering, world-class craftsmanship, efficiency and technology for an entirely new generation of drivers.

"Perfectly timed with the warm weather and excitement of spring, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio expands our product lineup while paying homage to the brand's rich heritage of open-air cabrios that deliver style, value and driving enjoyment," said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat Brand North America. "The new Fiat 500c has been intelligently tailored for our market ? now with an added dose of sunshine and panoramic views at the push of a button."

More than 50 years of Fiat brand's successful small-car formula
The Nuova Cinquecento debuted in the summer of 1957 as a cabrio and offered a distinctive canvas roof that opened right to the rear of the vehicle. More than 50 years later, the new 2012 Fiat 500c showcases the brand's ingenuity to build world-class small cars that ignite a spirit of the times through simple design, beautiful craftsmanship and timeless value. As a result, the Fiat 500 models have continued to surprise and delight customers worldwide.

The new Fiat 500c builds on the Italian styling, all-season performance, fuel-efficient powertrain options, interior comfort for four passengers and more than 35 safety and security features that have made the Fiat 500 hatchback model an international success.

Cleverly designed with a multi-position power-retractable cloth top, and fully stamped body-side silhouette, the new Fiat 500c delivers leading interior sound quality. In addition, its longer windshield and minimized header design maximize rear-seat passengers' outward visibility, while minimizing cabin turbulence. And for easy access to the cabrio's trunk, premium "parallelogram" liftgate hinges conveniently position the liftgate out of the way, while the power-cloth top simultaneously retracts.

Iconic Cinquecento Cues with an even greater panoramic view
The new 2012 Fiat 500c combines iconic Cinquecento cues and a fully power-operated cloth top ? all wrapped in modern Italian styling that conveys simplicity and joy.

At the front, the new Fiat 500c model's signature "whiskers and logo" face features circular projector headlamps and lower park lamps that resemble the latest Fiat models while paying homage to the distinctive elements of the original Cinquecento in stylistic harmony. To show its road-holding stance, the Cabrio's front fascia features chromed trim and tapers outward toward its large wheel arches, while a horizontal cooling duct adds design character and additional engine cooling.

Differentiating the Fiat 500c from the hatchback model is a slightly longer windshield that is designed to provide passengers with an enhanced outward view. In addition, the windshield elegantly conceals the reinforced upper-cross member that ensures the Cabrio's rigid body structure during spirited driving.

From the side, the Fiat 500c's pillars stand out and present strong arches, while the shape of the soft top provides a more slender silhouette compared with the hatchback version. Below, the black or available chromed belt moulding, the signature body-side A-line slopes forward for a dynamic look, while its lateral section features clean surfaces and flared wheel-arches to deliver a modern interpretation of the historic Cinquecento. To keep its design simple and modern, the hood-to-fender seam is elegantly cut at the A-line. Filling the wheel wells are four unique wheel designs, all with the "500" logo on the centre caps. For more design character, bi-halogen projector headlamps and clear-lens taillamps are visible from the side profile thanks to the way the cabrio's rounded sides link up to the front and rear.

At the rear of the new Fiat 500c, a roof-mounted and colour-matched spoiler improves aerodynamics while elegantly integrating the centre high-mounted stop lamp that cleverly functions with the roof up or down. Separating the premium cloth top from the liftgate is a chrome trim accent that also highlights the Cabrio's width. To keep the rear design clean, the lighting functions are divided vertically following the liftgate's cutline. Finishing off the iconic styling of the Fiat 500c is a chromed license plate brow, a motif from the original Cinquecento that was inspired by a bicycle saddle.

Intelligent power-cloth top stylistically reinterprets the past
As a contemporary solution to the famous canvas roof on the original Cinquecento, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features a premium dual-layer power-operated cloth top that is designed to deliver all-season driving pleasure with the top up or down. Directly inspired from the historic Cinquecento, the Fiat 500c features a wide glass backlight to retain the same visibility as the hatchback, while its rounded corners are a direct inspiration from the historic model.

With just the push of a button, the Fiat 500c's power-operated cloth top retracts up to the rear spoiler during speeds up to a best-in-class 96 km/h (a midway point can be chosen by pressing the button anytime between). Press the roof button again, and the roof will neatly fold all the way open and tuck neatly behind the rear head restraints (up to 80km/h).

The power-cloth top is also intelligent. When the liftgate is opened for trunk access, the power-operated cloth top automatically retracts back to the rear-spoiler position to avoid any obstruction.

Modern elegance inspired by timeless design features
Even with the top up, the interior of the new 2012 Fiat 500c is airy and roomy, and an environment designed to be comfortable and enjoyable for any destination.

The interior design theme of the new Fiat 500c is an artistic blend of clean lines and conveniently located features inspired by the historic model. Through the available leather-wrapped steering wheel, the Cabrio's single concentric instrument cluster features the speedometer, tachometer and trip computer in a distinct and stylish manner. Integrating the latest in portable vehicle navigation for improved route guidance, the instrument cluster features a central LCD monitor that shows pictograms from the TomTom® navigation with BLUE&ME™ Handsfree Communication. These elements, together with a highly integrated centre stack and a uniquely designed radio and climate control system, can be ordered in Ivory or Black for an extra level of personalization while also influencing the interior theme to be more sporty or vintage.

The instrument panel of the new Fiat 500c continues the perfect blend of modern simplicity with iconic Italian styling. The upper instrument panel is designed to convey a sense of refinement and elegance and features colour-matched exterior accents for added detail. Frequently used vehicle buttons are highlighted with chromed circular rings and are centrally located on the exterior-matched instrument panel trim for a premium appearance. The lower instrument panel and centre console highlight the new Cabrio's space utilization with large- and small-sized storage spaces to keep mobile devices at a convenient reach.

A new passenger glove box stores valuable items, while concealing the available BLUE&ME Handsfree Communication system's USB port for instant integration of mobile devices including an iPod. For an integrated look, the new automatic- or manual-transmission shifter and bezel are ergonomically located into the lower instrument panel and feature a mechanically styled shift knob accented in black, chrome or leather depending on the model.

The new Fiat 500c's interior features highly detailed driver and passenger seats available in 10 colour and material combinations for maximum personality with an added touch of personalization. Inspired by the historic Cinquecento of the 1960s, the new seats offer the same unique split-colour effect: monotone fabric at the bottom and the upper seatback, while the top of the seatback and head restraint is matched to the Ivory or Black interior environment. On the Fiat 500c Lounge model, standard premium leather seats are available in traditional Black, a Brown hide or ultra-sporty Red and deliver a sophisticated look.

Continuing the clean interior design theme, the door panels of the new Fiat 500c feature a contrast between the upper trim upholstered to match the seats, while the surrounding area elegantly incorporates large map pockets and premium speakers. Paying homage to the past, the chromed "hook" door-handle shape recalls one of the most remembered features on the original model while integrating modern-day power door locks.

A small Cabrio that lives big
Thanks to careful analysis of the interior cabin, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features an impressive 2157 Litres of interior space, while numerous built-in storage locations quickly and conveniently store mobile devices and travel gear. To highlight the fact that the Cabrio is roomy, the rear passengers' raised and bolstered seat backs are identical to the hatchback model, while even more headroom is present with the dual-layer roof up.

In addition, the luggage compartment accommodates 153 Litres of gear with the seats up and a maximum of 663 Litres of gear with the 50/50 split-fold rear seats folded down. To more easily load all of the gear, designers maximized the liftgate width and kept the trunk lift-over height low.

FIAT 500c embodies a new vision of technology's role in the achievement of sustainable mobility
Adapted for Canadian customers, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features an all-new 1.4-litre 16-valve engine with state-of-the-art MultiAir® fuel-saving and emissions-reducing technology. Invented and patented by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), MultiAir provides world-class levels of power, fuel efficiency (up to 55 MPG Highway (5.1 L/100km), quality and refinement.

Delivering spirited driving and well-suited for the Fiat 500c's lightweight design, the efficient and responsive 1.4-litre MultiAir in-line four-cylinder engine provides 101 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 98 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. When paired with the five-speed manual transmission, the Fiat 500 delivers up to 55 MPG Highway (5.1 L/100km).

Helping to achieve 10 per cent greater fuel efficiency and power while decreasing CO2 emissions up to 10 per cent compared to engines without the system, the new Fiat 500c features the world's first Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA) system on a production engine. Also known as MultiAir, this innovative intake-valve system replaces a traditional overhead cam with hydraulic actuation controlled by four, fast-responding, electronic solenoids ? delivering instantaneous air-fuel adjustment at any time in the engine cycle for maximum efficiency and power.

eco:Drive™ Application helps to improve driving efficiency
The new 2012 Fiat 500c with state-of-the-art eco:Drive™ Application demonstrates that an automaker's environmental responsibility should not stop when the car leaves the production line but rather extend into the actual way customers drive their cars.

Fiat's eco:Drive Application collects all necessary data relating to vehicle efficiency and, through the available BLUE&ME™ USB port, transmits it on to any USB memory stick. Once the driver plugs the memory stick into his or her personal computer, the system presents the driver with the Fiat 500c's detailed environmental performance, including the CO2 emission level for each trip. In addition, Fiat's eco:Drive Application analyzes the driver's style and provides recommendations on how to modify his or her driving style to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Originated in Europe, Fiat's eco:Drive Application has encouraged drivers to set challenges ? CO2 reduction targets for specific journeys or over a set period of time. And as part of a global "eco:Ville" community, the system encourages all drivers to come together and pool their fuel and emissions savings to illustrate how many drivers' individual contributions help the greater good.

All-new six-speed automatic delivers added performance and fuel efficiency
The new 2012 Fiat 500c offers two reliable, robust and sophisticated transmissions uniquely designed for improved efficiency and driving fun.

An all-new six-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable gear changes provides the new Fiat 500c with smooth shifting and excellent fuel economy. For more engaging driving, the driver can select the "Sport" mode.

Should the driver select 'Sport' mode on the instrument panel, the all-new six-speed automatic transmission provides even greater driving enjoyment. Through advanced powertrain management, 'Sport' mode enables quicker gear changes, a unique throttle map for improved engine responsiveness and allows each gear to be held for longer periods near the redline.

An upgraded five-speed manual transmission features new gear ratios for the North American market, allowing the new Fiat 500c to deliver improved fuel efficiency and quicker off-the-line acceleration. For improved durability and pedal feel, a new self-adjusting hydraulic-clutch system is standard on the manual-transmission-equipped Fiat 500c.

April 20, 2011 , Windsor, Ontario - The most powerful, technologically advanced, high-performance Jeep® vehicle ever ? the all-new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8® ? arrives this summer with a combination of Jeep?s legendary capability and utility, merged with the renowned advanced performance engineering from Chrysler Group LLC?s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team.

Delivering outstanding driving performance in all conditions, and complemented by key SRT attributes ? including functional, performance-oriented styling, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking and race-inspired interior appointments ? the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 broadens the Jeep vehicle lineup and builds upon the successful launch of the award-winning 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

?The all-new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the ultimate performance SUV, combining Jeep capability with world-class performance, luxury and technology?, said Ed Broadbear, Vice-President, Marketing, Chrysler Canada Inc.

Designed and built using the proven SRT formula that raises the performance to astonishing levels, the new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 runs from 0-96 km/h in 4.8 seconds, 0-160-0 km/h in the mid-16 second range, can cover the quarter mile in the mid-13 second range, has a top speed of 250 km/h, and brakes from 96-0 km/h in 116 feet.

Awe-inspiring powertrain
Powering the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler Group?s all-new 6.4-litre HEMI® V-8 with FuelSaver MDS Technology that delivers an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque ? an improvement of 45 horsepower and 45 lb-ft of torque over the 6.1-litre HEMI V-8 it replaces.

An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wider and improved rpm band. Specifically,
90-per cent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance.

Standard FuelSaver MDS Technology and a new-for-2012 active valve exhaust system allows four-cylinder operation to engage over a wider rpm range, to deliver both improved fuel efficiency ? an estimated 13-per cent increase on the highway ? and an extended range of approximately 850 kilometres on one tank of gas.

Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard Auto/StickTM on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the race track. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift while the transmission controller calibration prevents situations that might over rev the engine. Fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting makes the powertrain more responsive while minimizing harshness.

Outstanding ride, handling and capability
For 2011, all Jeep Grand Cherokee models boast an improved and refined on-road ride thanks in part to the vehicle?s body structure. Torsional stiffness was improved 146 per cent versus the previous model, for improved ride, durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The improvement is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone, marking a 53-per cent increase in spot welds, a 42-per cent increase in arc welds and a 38-per cent increase in structural adhesive.

With the new 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8, engineers have improved handling even further.

The best handling Jeep vehicle ever ? capable of .90 g on the skid pad ? features a new SRT-tuned, adaptive damping suspension managed by the new Jeep Selec-Track system that interacts with several different systems (stability control, adaptive damping, transmission shift strategy, transfer case torque proportioning, Electronic Limited Slip Differential performance, throttle control and cylinder de-activation) to automatically tune the dynamics of the vehicle. Drivers can manually choose between five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions:
  • Auto: provides the most compliant ride and automatically adapts to any road situation using the adaptive suspension tuning
  • Sport: provides enhanced body control for a sporty, fun-to-drive ride for the street
  • Tow: provides a safe reduction in pitch and bounce for enhanced towing capability
  • Track: provides the high-performance, firm, ?track-tuned? suspension option to lock down body motion for the ultimate handling experience
  • Snow: provides the most conservative dynamic mode, so the vehicle will safely stay in-line in inclement winter weather conditions
The standard Jeep Quadra-TracTM active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, the Jeep 4x4 system can transfer up to 100 per cent of available torque to one rear wheel.

The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles to maintain the driver?s intended path. The new Grand Cherokee SRT8 also features an Electronic Limited Slip Differential that eliminates rear wheel slip and improves handling.

The performance-tuned, fully-hydraulic steering system is improved with a new, heavy-duty pump and pump cooler. Revised gearing gives drivers more direct feel and on-centre response.

New split 5-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ride on P295/45ZR20 Pirelli PZero run-flat tires (standard All-season or available Three-season).

Rounding out the capability of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a trailer tow rating of 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).

Outstanding braking
Chrysler Group?s SRT vehicles are well known for their world-class braking. Stopping power for the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes courtesy of new SRT high-performance Brembo brakes with four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS).

Stopping distance performance of 116 feet from 96-0 km/h is made possible by new red-painted, Brembo 6-piston (front) and 4-piston (rear) calipers, and vented rotors at all four corners measuring 15-inches (front) and 13.8-inches (rear).

Aggressive and functional exterior
The functional performance exterior of the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 features the ?planted? look of a high-performance sports car by being lowered 25 millimetres and adding new, SRT-exclusive, body-colour wheel flares and side-sill cladding.

A one-piece front fascia contains new LED multi-function daytime running lamps that result in an exclusive face for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, while a body-coloured front grille with a unique black screen background and chrome bezel inserts adds to the aggressive look.

The integrated lower front grille is painted in gloss black and a newly designed underbody belly pan features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and fade performance. Completing the new front end is a newly sculpted hood with functional dual black heat extractors for added engine cooling.

At the rear, the SRT performance influence continues with a new liftgate spoiler that reduces drag and improves downforce. A unique one-piece rear fascia includes a separate air diffuser along with an available trailer receiver and access cover. New for the 2012 version of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the dual-sport exhaust system featuring 4-inch exhaust tips.

Race-inspired and functional interior
The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee?s refined, luxurious interior takes on a performance feel in SRT8 form with race-inspired technology and SRT-exclusive appointments.

An all-new, leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel features a unique rim section with a flattened bottom surface ? evoking a race-inspired cockpit ? that showcases the SRT logo. Standard paddle-shift controls flank both sides of the new contoured palm rests while all audio and Electronic Vehicle Information Centre (EVIC) controls are accessible from the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel. A power tilt and telescoping steering column also is standard.

SRT-exclusive Performance Pages are new for 2012 and show instant feedback on steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, 0-60 mph and 0-100 km/h times, 60-0 mph and 100-0 km/h braking distances, g-forces, and one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times, along with expanded engine information.

New SRT-styled Nappa leather and suede seats, with sculpted bolsters and adjustable headrests, provide all the comfort for daily drives ? and ?grip? to keep the driver and passengers in place during spirited driving. The embroidered SRT logos and contrast stitching accent the two front seats. Heated (front and rear) and ventilated (front) seats are standard.

Carbon fibre accents are integrated into the instrument panel and door trim panels and new bright, racing style brake and pedal pads add to the high-performance look inside the cabin.
An available CommandView® dual-pane sunroof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sunroof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle.

The available Luxury Group package adds premium leather to the door trim panels, instrument panel and centre console along with a power liftgate, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and Blind-Spot Monitoring.

Safety and security
Already a recipient of the 2011 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 'Top Safety Pick' for the volume Grand Cherokee models, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 offers consumers 45 safety and security features including:
  • Active head restraints: Deploy in the event of a rear collision. Restraints are designed to reduce injuries by minimizing the gap between the head restraint and the passenger?s head
  • Active turn signals: Turn signal flashes three times when stalk is depressed for one second to indicate a lane change
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): The system decreases the vehicle?s pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. The system will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane. ACC will maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic without having to continuously adjust settings
  • Advanced multi-stage air bags: Inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of the impact Meets FMVSS 208 advanced air bag requirements for smaller, out-of-position occupants
  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions
  • Anti-lock brake system with rough-road detection: Anti-lock brake system capable of detecting if the vehicle is driving on a rough road by the oscillations in the wheel speed signals. When rough road is detected on off-road surfaces or trails, ABS enters a different pressure control where it will hold the brake pressure for longer pulses
  • BeltAlert: Activates a chime and/or illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver and front passenger to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without belted front-seat occupants
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM): Uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes, or if being passed by or passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the sideview mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime
  • Brake Assist: In an emergency brake situation, the system applies maximum braking power, minimizing the stopping distance
  • Brake Override: When a disagreement exists between the throttle and the brake, the brake signal causes the engine controller to reduce engine power, allowing the operator to stop the vehicle
  • Brake-Traction Control System (BTCS): Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning
  • during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s)
  • Child seat anchor system: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats
  • Constant-Force Retractors (CFR): Regulates the force exerted on the occupant by the seat belt, and then gradually releases seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM): An extension of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Uses input from ESC sensors to anticipate if the vehicle is at risk of entering a potential roll situation, then applies the brakes individually and modulates the throttle position as needed
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. Provides the benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions including snow, ice or gravel. If there is a discernible difference between driver input through the steering wheel and the vehicle?s path, ESC applies selective braking and throttle input to guide the vehicle back on to the driver?s intended path
  • Energy-absorbing steering column: The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated bending element that deforms during column stroke for optimal energy management
  • Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air bag deployment. Also shuts off flow of fuel to the engine
  • Express Up/Down Windows: One-touch powered express up/down window button located on the front driver and passenger-side door
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Using forward-facing radar sensors, this system detects when the vehicle may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and alerts the driver so the driver can determine what action must be taken in order to prevent the vehicle from a collision
  • High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps: Provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination
  • Hill-Start Assist (HSA): Assists drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period of time after a driver?s foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period of time after the driver?s foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released
  • Keyless Enter-N-Go: When an individual enters the vehicle, electronic sensors detect if the vehicle key fob is present. The vehicle will then allow the individual to push a button to start the vehicle without having to insert the key into the ignition
  • Knee bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to properly position the occupant during impact, enabling air bags to work effectively
  • Navigation system: Voice-activated navigation system available with real-time traffic to provide precise guidance to destination through the use of global positioning system (GPS) satellite technology
  • ParkSense® rear park assist system: Assists at low speeds in reverse to detect stationary objects. Consists of audible warnings for the driver and has a display in the Electronic Vehicle Information Centre (EVIC) integrated into the instrument cluster
  • ParkView® rear back-up camera: Provides a wide-angle view of the area immediately behind the vehicle, giving the driver greater peace of mind before reversing at low speeds. Contains grid line to aid the driver when maneuvering into parking spaces or narrow areas. Also aids in lining up a trailer to the vehicle?s trailer hitch, when so equipped. The image is displayed on the navigation screen when the transmission is shifted into Reverse
  • Power tilt-and-telescoping steering column with memory: Allows steering column to tilt and move toward or away from the driver to achieve a safe and comfortable distance from the advanced multi-stage front driver air bag, if deployed
  • Rain Brake Support: Uses the ESC pump to occasionally push brake pads lightly against brake rotors in rainy conditions in order to keep rotors dry
  • Rain-sensing wipers: A driver convenience feature that automatically senses moisture on the windshield and activates wipers
  • Ready Alert Braking: Anticipates situations when the driver may initiate an emergency brake stop and uses the ESC pump to set brake pads against rotors in order to decrease the time required for full brake application
  • Rear Cross Path (RCP): In parking lot situations, this system warns drivers backing out of parking spaces of traffic moving toward their vehicle. It activates any time the vehicle is in Reverse. The driver is notified of vehicle(s) crossing behind the vehicle via illuminated icons on the sideview mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime
  • Remote (fob) operated windows (front windows - down only): Enable an individual to cool down the vehicle passively by opening front windows remotely
  • Remote keyless entry: Locks and unlocks doors and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system
  • Remote start: Conveniently starts the engine and activates key comfort settings based on ambient conditions by using the key fob while maintaining vehicle security
  • Rollover crash sensing: Senses a rollover and deploys seat belt pretensioners and/or standard full-length side-curtain air bags as needed
  • Seat belt pretensioners: During a collision, impact sensors initiate front seat belt pretensioners to remove slack in the seat belt system, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupant?s head and torso
  • Sentry Key® engine Immobilizer: Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a preprogrammed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds
  • Signal mirrors: Signal lamp built into the housing of exterior mirrors allows turn signals to be viewed from the front, as well as the sides and rear of the vehicle in order to alert oncoming traffic and pedestrians
  • SmartBeam® headlamps: Headlamp system adjusts to ambient light and oncoming traffic to deliver maximum lighting
  • Standard full-length side-curtain air bags: Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. This type of air bag is housed in the headliner just above side windows
  • Standard seat-mounted side air bags: Provide enhanced protection to thedriver and front outboard passenger in certain impacts. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. Standard side air bags are housed within the outboard side of each front seat
  • Three-point seat belts: Front outboard seating positions and all rear seating positions have lap and shoulder belts
  • Tire-pressure monitoring (TPM): Informs driver when tire pressure is too low. Pressure-sensor modules within the valve stems of all four road wheels send continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system
  • Trailer-sway control (TSC): Reduces trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic. The system monitors the vehicle?s movement relative to the driver?s intended path, then applies alternating brake pressure to slow the vehicle and then increases the pressure on one front wheel in order to counteract the sway induced by the trailer
  • Uconnect® Phone: In-vehicle, voice-activated communication system that allows customers to talk on their Bluetooth compatible phone with your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The built-in phonebook sync feature automatically downloads as many as 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones, which can then be selected by simply saying contact name
Connectivity and Infotainment
New for 2012 is the available 825-watt, 19-speaker premium SRT performance audio surround-sound system from Harman Kardon® that includes a 10-inch subwoofer for the ultimate in sound quality.

Jeep Grand Cherokee to get 3.0L diesel V6 in North America by 2013

Jeep Grand Cherokee to get 3.0L diesel V6 in North America by 2013

Jeep CRD diesel engine

Autoblog just heard it straight from the Italian-Canadian horse's mouth: The hot new Jeep Grand Cherokee in North America will ? somewhere between soon and the end of 2013 ? be getting the same recently improved 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine that Europe gets. In the Grand Cherokee, this oil-burning powerplant is good for 237 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which is fully delivered between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm. This is music to all Jamboree and Rubicon fanatics everywhere.

It has not been decided whether or not there might be a special six-speed manual shifter offered alongside the W5A580 five-speed overdrive automatic transmission, and an eight-speed automatic is in the works, as well. But the manual with the Quadra-Drive II transfer case on a Trail Rated Grand Cherokee would bring the glee Stateside even moreso.

Fiat Auto CEO Sergio Marchionne is fast becoming the new Bob Lutz in his ability to cast aside all carefully kept secrets of the communications team and talk about the good things that are coming. Only minutes after Jeep's international bosses artfully skirted the issue of a common-rail diesel GC here in North America, Marchionne assured us that one would, in fact, be coming. We respect the Jeep leaders. We dig Sergio.

Not only does the latest generation of the 3.0-liter CRD engine with Multijet II management ? built by VM Motori in Italy based on specifications from Fiat Powertrain Technologies ? get 19-percent greater fuel efficiency than the previous mill, it produces 20-percent less CO2 emissions. Towing capacity is quoted at just over 7,700 pounds, the maximum for any current Grand Cherokee trim.

But will the Wrangler get the European 2.8-liter CRD inline-four good for 197 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque, paired with the NSG370 six-speed manual and Rubicon Rock-Trac transfer case? Because that, folks, is the holy grail item. Even Sergio was mum on this.

Rebadged models in Latin America to help Fiat up Chrysler stake

By Alisa Priddle / The Detroit News

Fiat SpA is close to finalizing the international distribution and sales target it must meet to increase its stake in partner Chrysler Group LLC to 30 percent, Mike Manley, head of Chrysler international sales confirmed today.

Chrysler models will be rebadged as Fiats in Latin America as a solution to the impasse the automakers have had negotiating Chrysler contracts with some dealers in the region in efforts to meet the condition that 90 percent of Fiat's Latin American dealers offer Chrysler products.

Manley said the move still meets the spirit of the requirement by the U.S. Treasury when it approved aid for Chrysler which emerged from bankruptcy in June 2009 and formed its partnership with Fiat. "Everybody has looked at the situation, and I think they're relatively comfortable with the way we've proposed to do that," said Manley at an event in Auburn Hills for Jeep, the brand he overseas. "I think we've found the right way to fulfill the spirit of what we want to achieve," Manley told reporters.

Fiat has an extensive dealer network of about 700 dealers in Latin America, including 550 in Brazil and using this network saves Chrysler the cost of expanding its network from about 35 currently in the region. The other requirement of the international target is generating $1.5 billion in revenue outside North America -- a condition Chrysler has already met. Fiat had 20 percent of Chrysler initially and was promised 5 percent increments upon meeting three conditions. Regulatory approval for a fuel-efficient Fiat gasoline engine for use in vehicles sold by Chrysler here triggered the first hike to 25 percent in January.

The introduction of a Fiat-engineered Dodge compact sedan - also to be built in the United States -- that gets 40 mpg will occur in the fourth quarter and trigger the final jump to 35 percent share.

Once Chrysler repays its government loans, Fiat can purchase shares to bring its stake to 51 percent. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both Chrysler and Fiat, has said he would like to achieve the majority stake by the end of the year.

Chrysler continues to negotiate with banks and the Treasury to repay the loans that carry high interest charges. Marchionne also wants to eliminate government debt prior to an initial public offering as early as this year.
